Youth Week Portraiture drawing workshop:
Students will explore the phenomenon of drawing a portrait from life and using the Adams Portraiture Award exhibition as inspiration to create a plan for a future project.
The aim is to create a drawing that can be used as the basis of a painting, or a work that can be scanned and digitally enhanced in Photoshop or potentially an AI generated result.
Time frame 2.5 hrs.
Brief introduction and time to view the exhibition 1.30 - 2pm.
Part 1. 2 - 3 pm.
Observational warm up exercises using pencil line drawing on paper and studying the person sitting opposite:
Exercises eg:
• Blind contour portrait (drawing eyes closed) left hand + right hand drawing exercises
• Hands-on exploration of the skull, how to build a portrait from the inside out and using the skeletal form of the head as a guide on which to base the final drawing.
• Form and proportion - measuring and building layers of tone to create the details of the portrait.
• Proportion, measuring, choosing drawing tools and materials, erasure and correction, ideas and imagination,
Part 2. 3 - 4 pm.
Final drawing
Create a portrait drawing in pencil suitable for use as the basis of a painting or digitally enhanced work. Using observation and the skills acquired in Part 1. create a drawing that focuses on capturing a likeness of the model to the best of your ability. Drawing should be exact and detailed and suitable for further use.
