About the exhibition
From preparatory field sketches and early drawings to substantial paintings, Observing Nature, is a comprehensive survey of more than three decades of work by Nicolas Dillon, a leading New Zealand wildlife painter who lives and works in Marlborough. The exhibition’s title comes from the artist’s deeply-considered observations of nature which he translates into elegant compositions, usually with birds as the central focus. A descendant of early European farming settlers, his work is set entirely in remote environments without human presence. Working directly from life through a high powered spotting scope, the artist builds an intense connection to his subject. In his paintings Dillon demonstrates an extraordinary empathy with nature.
Nicolas Dillon has exhibited internationally at galleries and museums and his works are held in many public and private collections throughout New Zealand. Many of the works in this exhibition are from the artist’s collection.
