Disenchanted Prophets

13 May - 25 June 2017

About the exhibition

A landmark photography exhibition of Waitangi protest by recognised New Zealand artists Mark Adams, Bruce Connew, Gil Hanly, John Miller, and Ans Westra. This exhibition engages with the many components of Waitangi protests that reveals them as far more significant than as portrayed by the negative media.

The exhibition explores the national context of Waitangi protests, leadership, relationships both internal and external to the protestors, the role of slogans in articulating desire for change, and the differing views as to how the Treaty of Waitangi is conceptualized. Images taken over 4 decades reflect the changes in attitudes to the Treaty, from both protesters and the general public, the period when the Treaty finally received some recognition by government and mainstream New Zealand.
